Aviation Development Programme

Zwartkop 2005

Youth Day - June 16

Siyandiza (the Air Force youth development programme) hosted a Youth Awareness day at Swartkop. Youth were invited from various school. Thanks to the department of Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, a whole lot of school children were bussed to Swartkop from various different places in Mpumalanga, including Ermelo and Standerton to mention a few.

Youth from Mpumalanga building Glider Darts

Interest was shown by parents, teachers and pastors. Most importantly interest was shown by the youth. We had the Irene Air Scouts wanting to know more about our programme, and if we could get them involved.

We had youth from various schools showing interest, Kleinfontein High School, Cornerstone College, Lindile Secondary School

A Cornerstone College learner building a Glider Dart

The youth had great fun building their Glider Darts and then seeing them fly. It is really wonderful to watch their faces as they realise that something that they build, flies.

These two kids had the most amazing time, they built their Glider Darts, and then spent the rest of the day playing with them. They returned a few times for minor repair work. The two Darts spent a lot of time airborne.

These two girls were not going to let the boys get the better of them, they took great pride in their darts, and also had loads of fun flying them. The kept returning to report back to Jessie, on various different things.

Flight Simulators

I would like to thank Atex Continental for the sponsorship of the computers. They provided three machines for use at the event.

Once again the FMS flight simulators were a great success. The simulator is great to use for teaching the learner how to fly a radio controlled plane.

Radio in hand and ready to learn.

Later on this Youth knows exactly what he is doing, and ready to try out a real model... that would be the next step in our development programme at a school.

Craig Goodrum was manning the Flight Simulators, here he is assisting a youth the the simulator.

Not just a hobby or sport for boys...

This learner was tasked with looking after his little brother.

He decided that it was time his little brother learnt to fly.

Girls of all ages also have fu flying

Our friends at SAA used one of our Glider Darts to explain to the youth how, what and why a plane flies...

Here Vuyani is explaining how air flows over a wing.

This was another really good day, always wonderful to see the interest of flight being ignited in a child's mind. There is a lot of interest being shown in development programmes like these from all spheres. The children see it as fun, the parents see it as a healthy interest for the youth. The educators see it as teaching new skills to the learners. Through this programme various benefit, our sport grows, the awareness of avionics is increased. New skills are taught, the list is carries on.

I need to thank our volunteers for giving up their time to help in events such as this, Craig and Michelle Goodrum are always the first to volunteer, and I can always rely on my daughter Jessie.

Siyandiza, we are looking forward to the next event.......
