F3J Team

Simon Tladi, Kurt Stockton, Conrad Klintworth
The Model Gliding Association of South Africa
(MGASA) under the guidance of the South African Model Aircraft
Association (SAMAA) together with the Aviation Development Programme
are proud to be associated with the South African Junior and
Senior team to represent South Africa at the 5th F3J World Championship
to be held in Martin, Slovakia.

| The First F3J World
Championships was held in the United Kingdom in 1998, South
Africa had a full Senior team and 1 junior team member representing
us. Our Team was placed 10th with our top position, Dion
Liebenberg, being 10th. Our Junior, Craig Baker, came 20th.
At the 2000 World Championships in Greece, South Africa
was represented by a Senior Team only. Our top pilot,
Craig Goodrum, came 6th overall
Then in 2002 at the event held in Finland we once again
had 1 junior represent us. Our final Team placing was
12th, and out top pilot, Michelle Goodrum, was 28th. Our
Junior, Ian Lessem, was placed 12th.

The Championship in Canada in 2004 was once again
only represented by a Senior Team. Final Team Placing was 15th.
Our top pilot, Craig Goodrum, was placed 4th.
Incredible achievements, especially considering
the fact that we do not have as much competition exposure as
the European contenders.
The next Championships to be held in the Slovak
Republic will be a first for South Africa:
-
We intend to have a Full Senior Team and a
Full Junior Team, proudly wearing the Green and Gold, represent
us;
AND
-
the Junior Team will have a member on the
team* that has come through the development and transformation
programme (Aviation Development Programme).

What is F3J?
The original concept for F3J was developed in England. The idea
behind the format was to eliminate the dependence on winches and
retrievers and put the emphasis on pure thermal duration.

Team Manager
Ilma Stockton runs the Aviation Development Programme. The programme
is divided into two main areas:
- Awareness: In conjunction with the Siyandiza Project
(Air Force Awareness Programme), the Aviation Development Programme
sets up interactive stands at the Air Force Base when ever they
have an awareness event. This year the Aviation Development Programme
has been present at both the June 16 event and the event held
by the Air Force museum in September. The Aviation Development
Programme was present at the AAD2004 show, this is where contact
was made with Simon Tladi.
- School Programme: Currently there are two schools participating
in the school programme. Hatfield Christian College in Pretoria
and St Johns College in Johannesburg. This programme is heavily
reliant on individuals donating their and their employers time
to enable them to assist the schools with the programme. The programme
is set up to become self sustainable in year three, until then
our dedicated individual is very hands on, the learners get taught
the basic theory of flight, they learn to fly on a simulator while
also building a model plane. Once the model plane is complete,
they are taken to learn to fly their model.
We are still very much in the early stages of the programme
and with dedication the programme will continue to show results
of transformation and development.
